Presidio Tunnel Tops, a stunning 14-acre park in San Francisco, embodies a visionary transformation in urban landscape design, celebrating nature, community, and environmental resilience. Opened in 2022, this park sits gracefully above the Presidio Parkway tunnels, uniting the Presidio’s Main Post and Crissy Field with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the city skyline – a setting that feels like a gift to every visitor.
Field Operations led the design, weaving together sweeping scenic overlooks, lush lawns, inviting picnic areas, and The Outpost, an interactive play space crafted from tree trunks and boulders, encouraging children to explore and immerse themselves in nature. The park is dotted with clusters of our signature Prax litter bins, standing proudly in groups of three along the pathways to promote recycling. These bins are no ordinary receptacles – each is a masterpiece of design and durability. Constructed from stainless steel and layered with a two-coat powder finish to endure the salty ocean breeze, they’re built to last. We even added a flap lid to keep out the curious wildlife, and their recycling labels are laser-cut to remain pristine for years, resisting scratches and fading.
Architectural support from EHDD brought to life the Crissy Field Center, and Earthscape Play enhanced The Outpost’s natural charm with imaginative structures that foster a love for nature in young explorers. Funding for this ambitious project came through a powerful blend of public and private support, with contributions from the Presidio Trust and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy rallying a generous $118 million for the park’s creation.
