Novel Loso Station

Finished: 2022

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

NOVEL LoSo Station, now rebranded as MAA LoSo, stands as a testament to design excellence in Charlotte’s evolving Lower South End (LoSo) neighborhood. Envisioned by Crescent Communities, the multifamily development blends modern architecture with an intentional nod to the vibrant cultural identity of its surroundings. The collaboration between Dwell Design Studio and Historical Concepts ensured a seamless integration of contemporary elements with timeless architectural cues, creating a visually dynamic yet cohesive urban presence.

Key to the project’s success was the thoughtful layering of design disciplines. LandDesign contributed innovative civil engineering and land planning, anchoring the property with functional, people-centric spaces. Dix. Hite+Partners further elevated the development with landscape architecture that softens urban edges and creates inviting outdoor environments. These shared spaces foster community interaction while complementing the architectural narrative. The outdoor living space along Whitton Street features a bespoke Landscape Compact bench. A row of five individual Blocq seating benches serves as a visual boundary while still inviting passers-by to be a part of the gardens and plaza.

Beyond individual elements, the overall project emphasizes placemaking. Its strategic location near the Light Rail Station connects it seamlessly to the city. The project exemplifies the design ethos by serving as a vibrant community hub.

Ultimately, NOVEL LoSo Station is a model of collaborative design excellence. Through architectural innovation, thoughtful interiors, and integrated landscapes, the development enhances its urban context, transforming a mixed-use community into a true destination. This synergy of design disciplines illustrates how modern multifamily developments can transcend utility to become living works of art.
