“Our solution is current, but also timeless,” says designer David Karásek, co-creator of the all-in-one chair and table sets. He adds, “Orbit is suitable for cafes, restaurants, schools, office spaces and city squares alike.” Together with architect Václav Kocián, they unveiled the idea of safe areas in cities, as well as the furniture to facilitate them. Everyone can taste outdoor dining their own way, close together but also far enough apart. In the same way, the placement of the tables ensures diners keep a safe distance.
“So often today we hear how badly people just want to be done with wearing masks,” explains Karásek. “After we’re past the need for them, we can still consider things like disinfection or social distancing in a figurative sense. But that’s not such a bad thing, especially when the means to do so is as pleasant as Orbit,” he adds with a smile.
The need for social distancing continues to carve its impact deeper and deeper into the public realm. We are just helping urban people Orbit each other from a safe distance. The no-frills design brings clean and fresh expressiveness which never gets lost in a space. As a securely stable standalone piece with adjustable feet, Orbit can be anchored but does not require it. Its usefulness is not limited to restaurant seating – in fact, it is even better suited to life in parks, squares, pedestrianised areas and also schools and offices.
The fully galvanised steel structure supports seats and a table surface made from sheet aluminium or HPL, resistant to various weather conditions and easy to disinfect. The rustproof feet stabilise the table on uneven surfaces, and can be adjusted with screws for secure anchoring to the ground.
